Algorithm Designer and Signal Processing Engineer

Main purpose of the job
To work on client assignments and provide design leadership and key ideas for projects involving DSP. A second part of the job is to assist in business generation responding to leads, proposing technical solutions, meeting clients and contributing to proposals.

Type of work undertaken by the group
The Radio Sensing Group encompasses our expertise in the fields of RF based detection, location and imaging, advanced control and signal processing. Our RF sensing and imaging work is based on systems such as radar and wireless communications technology. This work is currently extending to the areas of sensor fusion with image processing devices. A large part of the expertise is based around advanced signal processing expertise. There will also be opportunities to work in extracting information from complex signals in a range of more general measurement applications especially in the field of optical sensing systems.

Specific responsibilities
Engineers work on client assignments in multidisciplinary project teams, sometimes on more than one concurrently and in different team roles. High quality work is essential from every team member. As a project team member you would be responsible for carrying out your specific project tasks within the time-scales and budgets agreed with your project managers. There are many aspects to the work in addition to design. As your experience develops, you might wish to take on further responsibilities. You will work on the design of DSP algorithms for imaging, detection and sensing systems, and their implementation in hardware and/or embedded software.

Minimum requirements
• Good degree ideally with PhD in signal processing or related discipline • Knowledge and experience of the application of Bayesian Inference in processing systems • Experience in algorithm design, ideally in a DSP environment • Experience in implementation in hardware or software, ideally in DSP systems • Good software engineering skills • Excellent mathematical skills • Good communication skills, both verbal and written • Experience of the application of DSP in an industrial or a postgraduate environment • Willingness and ability to work on UK defence projects • Fluent programming in both C and MATLAB would be an advantage • Due to the nature of the work, it will be necessary to obtain security clearance for the successful applicant, and therefore the applicant must hold UK nationality

Digital Signal Processing Engineer

To create DSP solutions for wireless projects, from preparing the specification and designing the architecture through to detailed design, test, documentation and maintenance, and eventual hand-over of the full design to the client.

Type of work undertaken by the group
The Digital Signal Processing Group applies signal-processing techniques to a wide range of our clients’ applications. As part of Cambridge Consultants’ Wireless Division, much of our work is focused on telecommunications, healthcare and consumer goods. Our expertise ranges from complex software solutions in off-the-shelf DSP chips through to DSP ASIC/FPGA cores and pure hardware implementations. Approaching problems with this breadth of knowledge allows us to develop the power-efficient, low-cost designs demanded by so many wireless applications. Specialised intellectual property like our APE2 VLIW processor enables us to use digital signal processing where traditionally analogue techniques have dominated. Typical examples are software radio, and digital implementation of radio frequency and phase loops. Recent examples of development work include a cellular radio telemetry system for real-time medical monitoring, a satellite telephone, an ultra wide band (UWB) system architecture, a software radio ASIC for a consumer application, and a 802.16e WiMAX PHY.

Embedded Software Engineer

To develop embedded software in relation to Cambridge Consultants’ wireless product development projects. In most cases this involves working with one or more software or hardware engineers as part of a multidisciplinary project team. Embedded software is software working at the electronics/software boundary and/or in a constrained environment (e.g. tight memory, low power).

Type of work undertaken by the group
The Wireless Software Group develops software for wireless applications. We have particular strengths in low power, low cost radio implementations, with application areas such as telecommunications, healthcare, industrial and consumer goods. We have a significant pre-developed IP library to reduce development time and risk, including mature and proven Bluetooth and DECT protocol stacks. Recent examples of our work include the complete development of both a wireless medical telemetry system and a family of satellite communication units. Both of these examples involved the design and development of new hardware alongside the software development. Further examples include ZigBee and Bluetooth developments and an Air Traffic Control radio system.

Embedded Software Architect

Working on Cambridge Consultants’ wireless projects, you will create the software architecture for complex electronics systems. We have particular strengths in low power, low cost radio implementations, with application areas such as telecommunications, healthcare, industrial and consumer goods. We have a significant pre-developed IP library to reduce development time and risk, including mature and proven Bluetooth and DECT protocol stacks. Recent examples of our work include the complete development of both a wireless medical telemetry system and a family of satellite communication units. Both of these examples involved the design and development of new hardware alongside the software development. Further examples include ZigBee and Bluetooth developments and an Air Traffic Control radio system. The group carries out software design and architecture, as well as coding, usually in C. Other languages are occasionally used, such as assembly and Java, as required. Team sizes tend to be small and are made up of highly skilled engineers. High quality work is therefore essential from every team member.  

Specific responsibilities
In this role you will be responsible for: •Defining the software architecture for medium to large-sized projects and maintaining it throughout the project lifecycle •Ensuring the software design matches the client’s requirements •Designing key software subsystems and coding them, mainly in C •Taking the lead technical role for software, sometimes concurrently on more than one project •Defining regression tests to ensure that the software is robust and complies with the specification •Delivering high-quality software that meets the agreed requirements •Carrying out your project tasks within the timescales and budgets agreed with the project manager

Minimum requirements
With an appropriate background in wireless communications software, you will have a good degree in a relevant subject, such as electronic engineering or computer science. • Significant architectural experience in wireless communications • Experience of technical leadership • Significant experience in embedded software in C • Understanding of both hardware and software • Understanding of build systems and release management Experience of the following would be advantageous • Windows programming • One or more scripting languages Future Prospects
